Public Consultation Commission on Generational Renewal in Farming

Closing Date: Not specified - consultation currently open

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, has established a Commission on Generational Renewal in Farming to address the critical challenge of an ageing farming sector in Ireland. With only 7% of farmers under 35 and over 30% above 65, this consultation seeks to understand and address the barriers to generational renewal in Irish agriculture.

The Commission is seeking views on multiple aspects of this challenge, including the key factors behind the ageing farming sector, methods to encourage young people into agriculture, and ways to assist older farmers with succession planning. The consultation also seeks feedback on current support measures under the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027 and existing taxation policies.

Stakeholders are invited to submit their views via email to GenerationalRenewalCommission@agriculture.gov.ie, with the reference ‘Public Consultation’. Submissions should include a summary of no more than 300 words outlining the main points. Organisational submissions should include background information about their membership and objectives.

This consultation forms part of Ireland's commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for the agri-food sector, recognising that generational renewal is one of the nine key objectives of the current Common Agricultural Policy. The Commission will use these submissions to develop evidence-based policy recommendations for consideration.
